Insurance & Cost FAQs

Does insurance cover visits with a dietitian?

Yes! Most major insurance plans cover nutrition counseling (also called Medical Nutrition Therapy) at little or no cost. At AP Nutrition, we are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Premera Blue Cross, Regence Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, First Choice Health, Medicare, and Medicaid. See our blog post here about insurance coverage!

Which insurance plans does AP Nutrition accept?

We currently accept UnitedHealthcare, Premera, Regence, Aetna, Cigna, First Choice, Medicare, and Medicaid. We also offer private pay options if you prefer not to use insurance.

How much does a dietitian cost without insurance?

Private pay nutrition counseling is available. Contact us directly for current self-pay rates. Many clients choose this for added flexibility, especially when their insurance doesn’t fully cover visits.

Service & Coverage Area FAQs

Do you offer in-person appointments?

AP Nutrition is a telehealth-only practice, offering secure, HIPPA compliant virtual nutrition counseling across Washington and Oregon.

Can a telehealth dietitian really help me?

Absolutely. Our telehealth visits are just like in-person appointments — but more convenient. We provide individualized nutrition counseling for diabetes, heart health, weight management, digestive health, kidney disease, pregnancy, pediatrics, sports nutrition, cancer care, eating disorders, and preventive wellness.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a dietitian?

Many insurance plans don’t require a referral, but some do (especially Medicare and Medicaid). We can help you confirm whether your plan requires one.

How a Dietitian Can Help With Health Conditions

Can a dietitian help manage diabetes?

Yes. Nutrition counseling for diabetes is one of the most effective ways to improve blood sugar, lower A1C, and reduce long-term health risks. Most insurance plans cover diabetes counseling with a registered dietitian.

How does a dietitian help with weight loss?

A dietitian provides sustainable strategies for weight management that go beyond quick-fix diets. We focus on balanced nutrition, behavior change, and long-term results — and many insurance plans cover weight loss counseling.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

A registered dietitian (RD or RDN) is a licensed healthcare professional with advanced education, 1,000+ hours of supervised training, and a national board exam. Dietitians are also recognized by insurance companies, which means your visits are often covered. The term “nutritionist” isn’t regulated — anyone can use it, even without formal training.

What happens during a dietitian appointment?

During your first appointment, we’ll review your health history, goals, and eating habits. Then we’ll create a personalized plan that fits your lifestyle. Follow-ups provide ongoing support, accountability, and adjustments.

What are the most common myths about dietitians and nutrition?

There are a lot of misconceptions about what dietitians do. In reality, registered dietitians provide personalized, evidence-based care that looks very different from diet fads and social media tips.
